The following are questions you might consider asking students when they're stuck.
- What have you tried so far?
- Can you start with an easier problem?
- Can you draw a picture of the problem?
- How can you check?
- How many are there if ...?
- Are there any odd/even patterns?
- What might you do next?
- How do you know?
- Can you find another solution?
- What's the shortest, smallest, longest, biggest?
- Do you have any other ideas?
- What if we change ...?
- Will that always work?
- Have you forgotten anything?
- Remind me again what you figured out.
- Why must that be true?
- Is there a winning strategy?
- Please show me an example.
- How many different ... are there?
- What's the best place to put a 0? 7?
- Would a table help to solve the problem?
- Have you solved a problem like this one before?
- What has worked so far?
- What do you know so far?
- What is the question or problem you are tackling?
- Help me to understand ...
- Would blocks, dice, or other manipulatives help you to solve this problem?
- Please write down what you have so far.
- Can you solve a simpler version of this problem?
- What if we use fewer colors, lines, blocks, numbers?
